In the last twenty years, the Italian historiographical production on China, Korea and Japan has experienced a quantitative increase, diversification and hybridization with historical research conducted in other countries. However, historical studies on East Asia still remain underdeveloped when compared to the vast linguistic and literary production that constitutes a conspicuous portion of Chinese, Japanese and Korean studies in Italy. The redefinition of the epistemological status of areal studies on history has made the consultation of sources in the language an essential component of research and has contributed to the autonomy and development of studies on the history of China, Korea and Japan. Moreover, increased dialogue with other disciplines has helped to create new possibilities for integration. Neverthless, these histories still remain an appendix, while it would be desirable that they would be perceived and recognized as an integral part of human historical progress, notwithstanding their specificities.
Keywords: Italian historiography; modern and contemporary history; China; Japan; Korea.
