The middle layers of the enterprise, as Duccio Bigazzi called them, referring among others to shift leaders, technicians, engineers, and designers, have found as yet little space in Italian historical studies. Starting from Bigazzi’s integrated and comprehensive view of factory and enterprise studies, this article aims to explore some points related to the identity and achievements of this category by interweaving general remarks with a specific case study, which is the history of Mario Croce, reconstructed through the ego documents found in his private archive. Starting from 1947, Mario Croce worked as a steel technician at Safau of Udine first and Danieli & C. later, where he made a decisive contribution to the development of continuous steel casting, an essential innovation in the global steel industry.
Keywords: Labour and Business history, technological progress, steel technicians, continuous steel casting, Udine steelworks, imaginaries and representations of steel work.
