The author presents a cultural and biographical sketch of his life, and describes in more detail his experience with psychoanalytic institutes both in South and North America; for example, the Chilean institute was more relaxed and open, while the institutes of Topeka (Kansas) and New York were rigid and authoritarian. The severe crisis of psychoanalytic training system, which threatens the survival of psychoanalysis, is highlighted, and ways for improving it are suggested: e.g., abolition of training analysis, implementation of empirical research, quality control on the education process, training in psychotherapy and not only in psychoanalysis proper, etc. The author’s theoretical position within contemporary psychoanalysis is spelled out, and both neo-bionian and relational approaches are criticized. Finally, it is argued that psychoanalysis and neurobiology can enrich each other, for example in the field of research on affect theory.
Keywords: Psychoanalytic education, training analysis, theories of organizations, empirical research in psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic theory
