Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the most costly complications of diabetes and it is associated with considerable deterioration in quality of life and in psychological well-being. Psychological distress may rise when patients with diabetes and diabetic foot cannot perceive the social support. Aims of this study was to examine the association between depression, social support and health quality of life in patients with diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers and investigate the relationship between ulcers status, social support and depression. A set of questionnaires were submitted to 74 consecutively recruited diabetes patients. They comprised the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support (MPSS) and the Short Form Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) in order to evaluate depression, social support and health related quality of life. Patients that lived with their partner showed higher psychological well-being compared to patients lived alone. Overall, social support comes from partner, family and friends was directly associated with health related quality of life. Moreover, depressive symptoms was negatively associated with all subscales of SF-36. Instead, we didn’t find any corrlation between status of ulcers and psychological variables except for the subscale of physical activity. The findings indicate the need of pleliminary psycosocial assessment in patient with diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers.
