The introduction starts highlighting the heterogeneity of the articles published in this issue of the journal. This observation gives the opportunity to propose a fundamental question for the sociological studies focused on the city and the territory, namely the problem of the identity of a territorial approach. The author states that this identity does not depend mainly on the topic of the analysis but rather on the way the relationships between social and spatial variables are studied. In some studies the territory is named only as a general framework in which social phenomena are placed: this may be typical of any kind of sociological research. However, only within the studies in which the territory is interpreted as an active factor that interacts with social variables it is possible to speak of a "territorial" approach, such as to establish the identity of a specific sociological sub-field.
