The correlation between school grade repeating rates and selection is not sufficient to explain today’s complex reality. Diverse, and probably less visible, types of selection at school, are to be examined, such as failures caused by lack of interest or effort, low educational achievements despite possibilities, absenteeism and poor motivation. The Author describes the complex phenomenon present in the Italian schools and highlights also the positive elements given by students and teachers, real source of meaning. Answers can be found in meaningful experiences of the past, in current situations, or might have to be reinvented. Each solution is partial and temporary. The integration between solutions constitutes a prerequisite for addressing this topic. However, "educational success" in it’s broadest sense, remains the school’s main challenge and energy target, i.e. it’s mission and response to the community’s confident mandate.
