From the Enlightenment, which inspired the psychoanalytic project, to the observation, asserted by Nazism, of the irremediable disconnect between technical progress and progress in the life of the mind, Freud’s path speaks to the disarray of our time. How did the imperative demands for freedom, both on the individual and collective levels, become the driving force behind the unfailing human capacity to annihilate? What role do ideals, so essential in the struggle for a rational understanding of the irrational, play in such a thwarting of hopes for emancipation? What remains of the benefits of conflictual heterogeneity, opening up to autonomy? A misplaced judgment of reality; a misplaced fear of anxiety, supposedly protective; infiltration of our thinking by the satisfaction of our desires: our “feeling of freedom” which Winnicott nevertheless says is part of the health of the individual seems damaged, and the burden of drive determinism cannot be solely incriminated. Under the argument of self-preservation, alienating identifications seem to blindly weld the “compact majority”. Would it now be a question of the freedom to self-destruct?
Keywords: self-preservation, self-destruction, reality judgment, identification.
