The author analyzes three stories by Joseph Conrad as representations of the different forms of shadow that Mario Trevi talks about: personal shadow, shadow as archetype, shadow as archetypal image. These are three stories about the sea. The image of the vessel is proposed as a metaphor for the psyche in which the captain represents the ego complex struggling with internal difficulties, and with external difficulties represented by the clandestine person secretly embarked, by tropical fever and adverse weather and finally by the encounter with the image of destructiveness in the figure of Kurtz.
