School segregation in Bologna’s primary Schools: A socio-territorial analysis of educational choices

The article examines the residential and school distribution of foreign students enrolled in Bologna’s public primary schools (SY 2021/2022). Using georeferenced tools and multiple levels of analysis (city, catchment area, and school), it investigates school segregation and assesses how socio-spatial factors and school choices shape this phenomenon. Findings show that 25% of schools have a high concentration of foreign and disadvantaged students, with significant mobility between catchment areas for both Italian and foreign students. School choice is influenced by the residential context, with greater mobility in disadvantaged areas. However, foreign students face greater obstacles in using school choice to access schools with lower levels of disadvantage.
