The shift of historical content from academic research and teaching to a “public history” proposal for the general public is far from automatic. It involves the use and transformation of the content as well as the engagement of professional figures. On the one hand, this article explores the challenges arising from the transition of historical information from the academic sphere to outreach activities — including research, editorials, dissemination, and public initiatives — drawing on personal experience in an organisation dealing with the dissemination of historical knowledge. On the other hand, it analyses the critical aspects of this transition beyond this “personal experience”, situating it within broader historiographical and disciplinary issues, and addressing both the nature of historiography and the status of Public History specifically.
