How did Luigi Einaudi conduct himself during the various government crises? What influence did he have on the appointment of the President of the Council and on the choice of ministers? From an extensive examination of both published and unpublished sources, it appears that Einaudi, also during the first legislature, assumed a role that was neither passive nor purely ceremonial, but rather imposed constraints, in the realms of both economic policy and foreign affairs. His support for De Gasperi was relevant proved to be highly significant.
Keywords: Einaudi; President of the Republic; governments; economic policy; foreign affairs.
