The economic crisis that hit Italy in the last twelve years had significant repercussions both from a social and urban point of view. Several districts of public housing, but not only, have undergone emptying and re-signification in the organization and use of spaces, looking patient new forms of management and use of public heritage. There are many experiments and attempts that have been made, even with forms of public/private cooperation. For example, some initiatives and policies promoted by municipalities and managers have arranged for temporary rent to particular categories of the population, in order to ensure continued use of the heritage and avoid forms of spatial and social degradation. This paper aims to explore and give back some of these experiences in progress, by means of case studies in Milan and Turin, investigating the underlying policies, the methods of allocating housing and the effectiveness of some outcomes.
Keywords: public heritage, temporary rent
