This essay starts from an ongoing discussion in the Italian Schools of Architecture within the disciplines of Architectural and Urban Design, and aims to focus on the project as a tool of knowledge and as a product of scientific research without forgetting the dual nature of Architecture, which has always been divided between Science and Art, between technical-scientific knowledge and humanistic culture, among practical needs (stability, functionality, durability, safety, economics) and the human aspirations which, beyond the necessary pragmatism, ask to satisfy wider and more nuanced needs (utility, beauty, figurative and representative role, comfort, recognisability, creativity).
