Relying upon data from the Community Innovation Survey 2010 we study the determinants of innovation by Italian enterprises. They are distinguished by geographical location and the size of enterprise. By using the multivariate probit technique we consider the various types of innovation -product, process, organizational and marketing - allowing for complementarities between them. The analysis of the key factors influencing the probability to innovate (such as expenditure on innovation, the characteristics of human capital, the source of innovation funding from Central/Regional Administration or abroad, the cooperation agreements regarding innovation activities) allowed formulating suggestions for policy aimed to further stimulate innova-tion by Italian enterprises
