L’amnesia infantile si definisce come l’incapacità di ricordare sia da parte dei bambini che degli adulti eventi avvenuti durante la prima infanzia. Originariamente il termine fu coniato da Freud sulla base della sua esperienza clinica; le successive ricerche empiriche hanno confermato molte delle sue osservazioni originali, ma non la sua spiegazione del fenomeno. Per meglio comprendere le cause dell’amnesia infantile è necessario focalizzare l’attenzione sul concetto attuale di memoria, sul suo sviluppo, dall’emergenza della memoria nella prima infanzia al successivo sviluppo della memoria autobiografica. Ciò, peraltro, coincide con l’ipotesi di Freud che l’amnesia infantile non sia un fenomeno unitario, bensì costituito almeno da due fasi separate. Infine, l’argomento dell’amnesia infantile, può considerarsi paradigmatico nell’ambito dei rapporti tra Neuroscienze e Psicoanalisi.;
