The paper has two main goals. The first one is to show how the actuality of community approach and community studies is part of a historical trend that has characterized the experience of Italian socio-territorial studies. The second goal is to highlight both how community studies are changing and how the recognition of the ecological dimension as constitutive part of the social relations and human community life could strongly innovate community studies.
