This paper aims to analyse two novels which mark the beginning of Beur literature in the 1980s: Zeïda de nulle part by Leïla Houari (1985) and Journal: "Nationalité immigré(e)" by Sakhinna Boukhedenna (1987). Through the analysis of these novels, the author of this article intends to examine the subject of identity perception in the literary production of Beurs, i.e. writers born in France from Maghrebi parents. In both Houari’s and Boukhedenna’s novels crossing the Mediterranean from Europe to North Africa represents the focus of the narrative: the main characters _ two young women which are the writers’ alter-ego" start a journey to discover their parents’ country in search of their native origins and in the hope of finding their identity. By means of these two literary examples the issue of Beur identity research and its literary relevance will be explored.
