In this paper the author explores the characteristics of the mother-child feeding relationship in different environmental contexts and hypothesizes that feeding a son might bring out fantasies of destruction and also depressive feelings that involve the parents and the family. The material obtained from the psychoanalytically oriented observations of two children, at home, at mealtime is used to illustrate these themes and the different responses of the environment, as regards defenses and capacity of containing. The study shows that early feeding relationship may be a traumatic experience for a child, when the couple or the family are not able to contain and elaborate anxiety and fantasies.
