In the last two decades, the social security policies in our country have aimed to stabilize the ratio of pension expenditure to GDP, to eliminate inequalities, to increase the retirement age and to develop private pension capitalization. Regarding the first objective, already the reforms of 1992 and 1995 had proved sufficient. Nevertheless, the successive interventions until the end of 2011, believing anomalous our pension costs and detrimental to the interests of the younger generation, have continued to absorb resources from the social security system, to reduce the average pension relative to average income and to raise the retirement age. The article criticizes this approach, considering it as unfounded in its theoretical and empirical, counterproductive for the whole economy and burdensome for both the "fathers" and the "children". Proposals for the social security system consistent with the need to foster growth and social cohesion are presented.
