Starting from the observation that Freud’s convergence of research and therapy (Junktim) is not enough to validate interpretations and theories arisen during analytic treatment, the principal theoretical concepts, usually introduced by researchers dealing with the problem if psychoanalysis is a science, are clarified. The aim is to demonstrate that interpretations in the concrete case the analyst is treating are plausible only if the analyst uses in the same time a series of criterions, like convergence of clues, heuristic fruitfulness, aesthetic value and narrative coherence; some of these criterions were already focused by the epistemological developments of 20th century. Nevertheless, the more interpretations and explanations rely on general theories on psychic functioning, the more their confirmation requires resorting also to extra-clinical research, or at least to confrontations with bordering disciplines dealing with same chapters of psychoanalytic theory.
Keywords: Confirmation in psychoanalysis, interpretation, epistemology, Freudian Junktim, empirical research in psychoanalysis
