The goal of the essay is to understand if there is a way to empirically answer the question of whether our societies are ‘secular’ or more ‘secular’ than other societies. To this aim, the province of Bolzano and the alleged indicators of its accomplished ‘secularness’ are taken as an example. Dissatisfied with the explanatory effect of this picture of what there is, the author proposes as an alternative account an exemplary depic¬tion of contemporary spiritual tribulations given by an Anne Tyler in one of her best novels, which confirms, in his view, that the outcome of the secularization process is not an allegedly accomplished condition of ‘secularness’, but a much more uncertain and explora¬tory state of ‘secularmaybeness’.
