Learning is an active, participatory experience that should be thought of as a process rather than an outcome. This article considers how adults learn and explains how understanding learning processes can inform teaching approaches. Written for higher education instructors and other adult educator audiences, readers are introduced to adult learning theories and research, styles and preferences in learning, and active learning as a concept and underpinning of instructional planning. Further, specific teaching strategies that invite students to be more participative, engaged, and accountable in their own learning are described, and guidance as to how these activities can be designed into more traditional lecture-based courses is provided. The article concludes with ways instructors can make important linkages between learning theory and instructional practice and offers methods for introducing new instructional practices to students meaningfully and effectively.
