The Rivista Geografica Italiana is one of the oldest Italian scientific journals and aims to serve as the leading platform for advancing geographical research in Italy.
The Rivista was first published in Florence in 1894, on the initiative of the geographers Filippo Maria Pasanisi and Giovanni Marinelli. The aim of the journal, since the first issue, is to undertake with scientific rigour "the task of collecting, ordering, patiently and thoroughly investigating some of the fundamental facts about our country". This original aim, and the emphasis on scientific rigour, have remained unchanged over the decades, alongside a significant broadening of the journal’s geographical and thematic scope.
The Rivista has always been open to international scholarly dialogue, and publishes four issues per year (March, June, September and December), featuring articles in Italian, English, Spanish, and French. It publishes both research articles – that provide the elaboration and discussion of original empirical material – and review articles – that engage critically with specific themes or authors. In all cases, articles must make a relevant and original contribution to advancing the state of the art, and should go beyond merely reporting empirical findings or summarizing existing literature. To this end, the proposed articles are first evaluated by the editorial board, and then submitted to a double-blind peer-review process.
The “Opinioni e dibattiti” section of the Rivista includes commentaries, forums, interviews and critical reviews, aimed at promoting the scientific debate on significant themes, authors or books. These contributions are evaluated by the editorial board.
The Rivista is fully open access, and does not charge any article processing fees. It has been indexed in Scopus since 2013, and is a “Class A” journal according to the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Research, for human geography, and for economic, labour, environmental and territorial sociology.
This website includes issues published from 2021 to the present. Earlier issues, up to 1970, are accessible on the website of the Società di Studi Geografici.

Peer review policies
Since 2007, articles submitted to the Rivista Geografica Italiana undergo a double-blind peer-review process. The aim of the peer review is not solely to assess whether the article is suitable for publication, but to contribute constructively to improving its quality and relevance. To this end, the editorial board collectively evaluates whether the article aligns with the journal’s scope and standards and, if deemed suitable, submits it for review by at least two external experts. All reviewers are individuals with an established scientific reputation and experience in international publications. The editorial board maintains a complete list of reviewers, and publishes it every two years on the Rivista’s website.
The anonymous article is sent to each reviewer along with a questionnaire in which the reviewer is asked to give an analytical judgement on various aspects of the article; an overall comment about the article; a confidential comment on the article to the editorial board; an assessment of the article's suitability for publication, according to the following five options:
a) acceptable for publication as it is;
b) acceptable after minor revisions;
c) acceptable after major revisions, and a second round of review;
d) not acceptable, but the authors are suggested to submit the article to other journals;
e) not acceptable.
Once the reviews are completed, the editorial board send them to the authors, and asks to submit a revised version of the article, along with a detailed response to each of the reviewers’ comments and suggestions. In the case of b), the editorial board can evaluate the revisions autonomously, and/or ask the external reviewers for additional comments. In the case of c), the article is subjected to another round of peer review. If one reviewer recommends publication while the other suggests rejection, the editorial board decides whether to reject the article, or to send it to a third reviewer (without disclosing the results of the previous review), explaining this decision to the reviewer who recommended rejection. The peer review is completed once both the editorial board and the external reviewers judge the article satisfactory.
Reviewers are solely responsible for their evaluations and are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence tools.

Since 2007, articles submitted to the Rivista geografica for publication are subjected to a double-blind peer-review process.
All submissions are initially given a preliminary reading by the journal’s Board.
If the submission passes this preliminary reading, it is anonymized before being sent to two external reviewers.
The text is anonymized not only by removing the author’s name and affiliation, but also by removing other elements that might make it possible to identify the author(s), for example by removing as far as possible citations in the text and in the final bibliography of works by the author(s).
The external reviewers may be members of the Scientific Committee, of the Board of Referees, or selected by the Editorial Board on an ad-hoc basis. All reviewers are individuals with an established scientific reputation and experience in international publications. The complete list of reviewers is kept by the Editorial Board and published every two years in the Rivista’s website.
The anonymous article is sent to each reviewer together with a questionnaire in which the reviewer is asked to give:
-an analytical judgement on various aspects of the article;
- an overall comment about the article as a whole;
- a confidential comment on the article, to be seen only by the Editorial Board;
- a judgement on the publication-worthiness of the article in terms of the following five possibilities:
a) acceptable for publication as it stands;
b) acceptable but only after minor revisions have been made;
c) acceptable but with major revisions and with the suggestion that it be resubmitted to the review and reviewed a second time;
d) not acceptable but the authors are advised to submit the article to other journals;
e) not acceptable.
At this point the comment is sent to the author.
In the case of b), once the author has implemented the changes requested by one or both reviewers, the paper is sent to the Board who make a judgement as to whether the changes are satisfying. In the case of a negative judgement the Board will ask for further changes to be made.
In the case of c), once the author has implemented the changes requested by one or both reviewers, the paper is sent back to the Board who send it on to the reviewer or reviewers who made the judgement, to allow them to judge whether the changes are satisfying. In the case of a negative judgement the reviewer will request further changes until these are considered satisfying.
If one of the reviewers judges the work to be a), b) or c) and the other judges it to be d) or e), the paper may be either rejected or sent to a third reviewer (who will not be told of the previous judgements). If their judgement is d) or e) the paper will be rejected. If it is a), b) or c) the paper will be accepted and will follow one of the paths outlined above.
