What interests did prevail, within the main Italian state-owned electric power company, regarding the two issues of electricity tariffs and nationalisation? This article argues that, to answer this question, it is necessary to consider both the “political” and the more directly “economic” interests of Sip. In particular, the article explores the latter, focusing on the fundamental elements of financial sources, production structure, and results achieved. This analysis helps to explain the position taken by the state-owned company on the two main issues that affected the Italian electric industry in the period between 1945 and 1962.
