The essay outlines the conditioning factors and characteristics of (exploited) labour in agriculture, aiming to explore how the functioning of the product market affects the protections afforded to agricultural workers. The author examines the structural and pathological issues within agrifood supply chains, identifying governance measures designed to address these challenges. Among these, the author focuses on recent reforms that increasingly emphasize production costs, including labour costs, in the negotiation of agricultural product sale prices. Finally, the essay discusses several ethical certification initiatives aimed not only at safeguarding agricultural labour but also at ensuring fair income for primary producers.

Keywords: Market power; Agri-food supply chains; Agricultural work; Sale prices; Production costs; Ethical certification.
