The peculiarities of the health professions - the shifting recognition they have historically enjoyed and which has been accentuated in the pandemic period - call for a careful analysis of the variability of the social conditions and individual motivations underlying what is widely reported as a growing disaffection with work. This seems to call into question the decision to take up or remain in work. But what are its characteristics? Drawing on the literature and recent empirical docu-mentation, the article examines the transformations affecting the health professions (particularly the medical professions) on the basis of avail-able data, expert reflections, the narratives of those directly involved and the practices that are emerging in the Italian context.
Keywords: health professions, health care systems, emergency depart-ment, medical deserts
