High unemployment, increasing job insecurity and the widespread phenomenon of in-work poverty have contributed to the perception of growing job disaffection. However, caution is needed before concluding that work has lost its intrinsic value. This article examines the protective role of employment against economic poverty and other forms of non-monetary and subjective deprivation. The analyses are based on It-Silc survey data, specifically on the ad hoc modules on well-being (2013, 2018, 2022), considering a sample of both employed and unemployed households to investigate the relationship between work intensity and household poverty. The results confirm the protective function of employment, revealing that the probability of experiencing poverty increases as the number of employed household members and full-time employment decreases, with important implica-tions for labour and social inclusion policies.
Keywords: in-work poverty; multidimensional poverty; work-intensity; relational poverty
