Fausto Colombo’s contribution offers an insight into the transformations (of object, perspective and methodology) of media studies in Italy between the end of the 1970s and the second decade of the 2000s. The author traces the evolution of media studies by analysing four main factors that have decisively contributed to the orientation of research practices and their results: the evolution of the media system; the theories and research methodologies accepted and adopted by scholars; the role of centres promoting theoretical production; the normalisation of communication sciences through university recognition.

Keywords: media studies, communication sciences, Italy, audience research, generations.
