After a few years of rapid growth, Italian Public History needs to address a few fundamental issues. Firstly, it should agree on a definition of its research field. Secondly, it should broach two pressing issues: What does it mean that Public History is intended to work with the public? And what impact does this statement have on the role of historians? Both questions raise the matter of shared authority. Thirdly, a discussion on the reasons why it makes sense to work with a wider audience needs to follow. Finally, a common ground between Public History practices and education/academic research should be identified. All this constitutes the path towards maturity.
