The article explores the role of union identities and local actors in the production location choices of multinationals in the shipping industry; a topic little explored in the literature. It emerges from the in-depth case study that the union identity of dockworkers and the dynamism of local actors played a key role in the choice to “de-localize” their port traffic by two major shipowners. The article also contributes to an in-depth study of the reasons for the Port of La Spezia's rise in seaport rankings through the use of a meth-odology at the intersection between social history and labor sociology with élite interviews, archival documents, and newspapers analysis.
