The article proposes a critical reflection on the phenomenon of informal migrant settlements in the rural contexts of Southern Italian regions. Assuming the case of Campobello di Mazara-Castelvetrano (province of Trapani, Sicily) as a field of investigation, this contribution uses an exploratory approach to understand the role of public institutions in the governance of informality at local level, trying to verify their levels of responsibility.

Keywords: migrants; rural settlements; informality; public institutions; Sicily.
