The main objective of this article is to initiate a reflection on the fundamental significance, in the lives of individuals born and raised in Apulia (Italy), of returning to their homeland and roots after having relocated. Following an outline of the historical, sociological, and geographical context, the psychological analysis will focus on migration, a longstanding phenomenon in Italy, to elucidate the cultural and familial factors motivating individuals from Apulian region to depart initially and subsequently, for diverse reasons, to return. Through the depiction of a co-therapy session and the articulation of elements intrinsic to the therapists themselves, this article will shed light on the characteristics of Apulian families – culturally intertwined, matriarchal, and often possessing fluid boundaries – aiming to understand the influences that, even amidst migration, facilitate a nuanced equilibrium between attachment and separation.
Keywords: migration, return migration, differentiation, family psychotherapy, multigenerational, power of we.
