The article presents a critical exploration of the first local climate adaptation plans produced in Italy in order to investigate whether employing participatory tools in the planning process can be useful to integrate social-environmental justice criteria into the adaptation plans. To this end, Urban Political Ecology and envi- ronmental justice theory are adopted as the theoretical framework to analyze the climate adaptation plans produced by the cities of Ancona, Bologna, and Rome.
