In the recent interest in marginalized landscapes, abandoned historic villages are a core topic. These are places organically based on relational systems, whose values should be protected, and ongoing recovery processes enhanced. Linking the history of the artifacts to human events, and avoiding the risks of musealisation and touristification, this contribution is focused on the contexts of inner Calabria, and aims at discussing a form of reuse that, starting from the soul of places, tends to a ‘new community’, which can freely take root in the spaces of the past. In contrast to fragmentation and loneliness this form of urban planning promotes ‘neighbourhood workshops’ between tradition and innovation.
