Autonomous Vehicles (avs) are not science-fiction any more. The rapid technological development promoted by automotive companies is accompanied by more and more experiences in testing this technology in the urban environment. The scientific literature is exploring the possible effects of avs from many points of view; although many questions remain open, especially in view of the large margin of uncertainty surrounding the development of avs, there is growing concern about the potential negative impacts that they may have on the city. Starting from the debate on the expected effects and on the possible approaches in managing the transition to autonomous driving, this article reports the results of a focus group conducted as part of a backcasting exercise aimed to define policies to steer the diffusion of avs in Turin.
