The paper analyses the social security protections for agricultural workers, highlighting how the specific nature of the agricultural sector necessitated the adoption of criteria of application, methods and instruments entirely different and in some ways more advantageous than those of other productive sectors. After assessing the discipline and examining the main benefits, in particular the agricultural unemployment allowance, the paper focuses on the criticalities of the system. The special rules often lend themselves to a fraudulent use (facilitating illegal and fictitious work and relevant deficits of the agricultural welfare management), not effectively opposed by a weak inspection and supervisory system, which needs its strengthening and new measures to prevent offences. The Author concludes with some final notes wondering whether it is still sensible to maintain a special social security in agriculture or whether it is necessary to redefine at least its rules.
