In Italy the reflection on the demolition is marginal. It’s usually considered as a need to repair a failure, or as a prerequisite for a development. At present there are a new processes of obsolescence and an unprecedented surplus of building stock. This raises new questions to the urban project. The paper identifies some situations in which the act of demolishing could redefine its nature, opening up different perspectives of the project for the contemporary city and territory.

Keywords: Demolition; recycling; abandonment; urban regeneration; urban project.
