This article examines some aspects of Dewey's moral and political theory starting from the 1919/1920 Lectures in China. Specifically, the relationship between democracy, ethics and morality will be discussed by following some privileged lines of discussion: the relationship between the individual and the social; the dialectic between contingency and normativity; the relationship between ethos and morality, and between habit and reflectivity. These reflections take into account not only the Lectures in China, but also on some fundamental Dewey’s works, e.g. Ethics and The Public and its Problems. Thus, the aim is to show how the peculiarity of Dewey’s moral reflection constitutes the backbone of his theory of democracy.
