Since the second half of the 20th century there has been a renewed interest in the concept of the social imaginary. We have also witnessed the emergence, during this same period, of theories on visual studies, as well as the so-called "iconic turn". In this essay, the author wishes to highlight the importance of an ethical inquiry into the role of the image and imaginary in today’s society. Castoriadis and Taylor, in particular, have developed original frameworks for the interpretation of the social imaginary in the Western cultural context, thus opening up new horizons for the meaning of human action. Their theories show that it is not possible today to support the supremacy of either the isolated image, nor that of language analyzed at face value. Rather we need to discuss in detail a "metaphorical" language, in its ethical implications. The use of this language also implies new responsibilities for human action that communication ethics has been called upon to investigate.
