The De Prades affair has been the object of several attempts to throw light on its biographical and cultural aspects, from Franco Venturi’s masterful work of 1967, through Combes-Malavialle’s repeated contributions (1981, 1988, 1993), until Burson’s substantial volume entirely dedicated to the Sorbonne "querelle", to the role of the Jesuits and to De Prades’s personality and achievements. The outcry he provoked did much to reveal the contradictions and the more devious features of political and religious power over the following decades. The article presented here endeavours to reconstruct the affair, including the role of important figures such as Benedict XIV and the Prussian King Frederick II; it also deals with the consolidation of a public opinion which would continue to dominate the scene for centuries to come.

Keywords: de Prades, Benedetto XIV, Jesuits, Sorbonne, rational christianity, natural religion, Encyclopédie.
