The paper refers to the sociological debate on the economic, institutional and socio-cultural changes taking place in contemporary Western societies, to underline the link between these structural changes and the new meanings of work in individuals’life. The author shows the ambivalent feature of these meanings and their influence on individuals’biographical uncertainty: a key concept of her analysis. In the final part, the article considers the recent economic crisis, arguing that its main effect is to stress both inter-generational, gender and social inequalities, and the ambivalent meaning of work, mainly in young people’s experience
