Recovery as a paradigm is endorsed and appreciated by some and disputed by others. The source of divergences derives from the vastness and complexity of the term and the profound changes this notion has brought about in mental health services and knowledge. The author, in order to enhance a deeper understanding, highlights some of the different facets of recovery: i.e. the relationship between symptomatic and functional recovery; the reconstruction of the Self as a personal inner journey through a narrative development in which client and health professional collaborate to recompose the connections between life, illness and recovery; the restoration of the person’s social relationships - in the renewed understanding of psychosocial rehabilitation, in line with the principles of deinstitutionalisation, that comprises housing, employment and the effort to counteract the social drift looming over the young people presenting early signs of mental illness; the mental health services’ capacity to put into practice new approaches in risk management which include the risks of restricting the client’s personal freedom or of hampering recovery opportunities.

Keywords: Recovery, narrative development, awareness, housing, vocational reintegration, risk management
