Taking the results of research into the practices of family mediation found in the Marche region of the as a starting point, the article analyses the effects of the relationship between principles of regulation and potentially different and conflicting normative orders - i.e. judicial decision and mediation - in the framework of tackling family conflicts. In Italy, family mediation is practised in a context of generalised uncertainty about the methods used in relations b etween the institutions responsible for managing the crisis of separation and the absence of any regulation of the profession of family mediator. What emerges from the research is an evident discrepancy of views between legal operators and social workers with regard to both the plausibility and the effectiveness of family mediation. The actors involved have a variety of ways of tackling the uncertainty arising from the lack of shared expectations. The result of attempts to maintain conflicting requests and find common ground between them is often the production of hybrid practices
