The paper starts from the new edition of the writings that Luigi Sturzo and Antonio Gramsci devoted to the Italian "Southern question" in the ’20s. Their analysis is an early critical reflection on the genesis of modern industrial nations, and provides still valid tools for the interpretation of most recent transformations. Their influence on subsequent historical research can still be traced in the recent historiographical thesis of Raimondo Luraghi, concerning the existence of a "Southern American question", where the impact of Gramsci’s theories is particularly evident.
