This paper focuses on the personal relations between the two founders of schools, using also their correspondence and other unpublished works. The resultant kind of relationship, beyond the mere academic interests they shared, appears to be characterized by intriguing affective features, which do not exclude some moments of rough confrontation because of the different ideological views. In this context we can also find the famous controversy about psychoanalysis, whose Musatti was a pioneer in Italy; however, just Musatti understood the real reasons, ethical rather than strictly scientific, of Gemelli’s hostility to it after the Second World War.
