The authors propose that in borderline configurations there is high frequency of a special block of a very primitive dissociative process. This block forces the patients to organize a particular dissociation between the therapeutic setting and the therapist as a person. In this particular lock mode of the dissociative process, setting and therapist shall be placed in mutual opposition. To activate and to support the dissociative process means for the therapist to be a living element, movable within a frozen and stiff context. Through some insights from the clinical course of three patients the authors will show both the importance of the position of an analyst in the management of a case followed in a public mental health service, and the analyst’s contribution to the analytic process through the sharing, with the patient, of the dissociative process and the enactment function, proposed as a central transformative mode in the treatment or management of borderline situations.
