The author focuses on the relationship between the thought of Ernesto De Martino and Benedetto Croce’s philosophy of the spirit. Starting from Naturalism and Historicism in Ethnology, the article takes into consideration the structure of the Primitive Magic, which is centered on the concepts of presence and crisis of presence. Rethinking the relationship between presence and spiritual categories, the author argues that the last writings of De Martino represent a development, in a phenomenological sense, of Croce’s last positions, and an attempt to radicalize and make explicit some aspects of the philosophy of the spirit.
