The essay draws attention on the impact of the economic crisis on social stratification as well as on social mobility processes in Italy. Although the high ration of absolute social mobility, our analysis shows that in Italy it is always difficult for people socially disadvantaged to reach higher social classes. The result may be considered as a process of continuous reproduction of inequalities, only moderated by changes within the labor market with the emergence of new occupations in the service sector and in the knowledge economy.
