Starting from the global re-organization of production shaped by value chains, the article considers the implications on labour, the challenges that it faces and the answers that are emerging. After a period of uncertainty, the article shows a renewed activism from trade unions. On the one hand, they have sought more adequate strategies to the changing organisation of labour. On the other side, they have started to cooperate with other social movements and towards new forms of labour regulation. The restructuring of production through which capital relentlessly tries to overcome labour rigidity is in contradiction with another substantive dimension: for accumulation to occur, capital needs specific institutional arrangements. For this reason, there will always be a moment in which capital needs to define a socio-spatial dialectic.
