The present article discusses critical aspects of the current energy production system, based on fossil fuels, toward the so called green economy. In particular, it analyses the agriculture sector’s growing attention to energy production that derives from natural resources and plant cultivation, or from forest sources. The article evidences the way in which agro-energetic production, notwithstanding it’s contribution to the mitigation of CO2 emissions, and therefore to the reduction of the damaging effects on climate change, contrast with man’s fundamental urgency to produce food products. In fact, the model of energy-consuming agricultural production, which widely contributes to increase the global warming, clashes with the model of sustainable production. Sustainable production is more attentive to the rational use of natural resources as a means to guarantee food self-sufficiency and sovereignty to each population. In this complex context, even in the absence of a specific juridical definition suited to it, there exists the concept of an agricultural farm that produces renewable energy from biomass, agro-fuels and natural energy. The article also treats the role of green agricultural certificates in the struggle between climate change and the function of agro-energetic chains. The article analyses short agro-energetic chains that provide for maximum reduction of the distance between the place of production and the place of energy consumption. In addition, the article notes that short agro-energetic chains could represent a means for the social-economic development of local populations.
